Collection Scope and Contents
The collection consists mainly of personal and professional letters written by François Guizot, a French historian and politician. Correspondence in the collection includes letters written by Guizot as part of his many political positions, including as the Minister of the Interior, Minister of Public Instruction, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and cover mostly routine administrative subjects. The collection also contains some personal letters written by Guizot, most notably including some of his views on the French political scene in 1822, as well as letters regarding his literary career in the 1850s and 1860s. Most of the letters in the collection have an accompanying typed English translation.
The collection also includes an engraved portrait of Guizot painted by Paul Delaroche and engraved by Sidney L. Smith, as well as five handwritten essays by an unknown author on philosophy and various aspects of French history.
