Sub-Series Scope and Contents
This sub-series consists of files related to the Stringfellow Acid Pits, a toxic waste dump located in Riverside County considered to be one of the most polluted sites in California. Materials in the sub-series include correspondence, memorandums, reports, meeting minutes, and events documenting cleanup efforts under the Superfund program established by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), the controversy surrounding the Environmental Protection Agency's alleged mismanagement of the cleanup, and community activism surrounding pollution of nearby neighborhoods due to spills and leaks from the pits.
