Collection Scope and Contents

The collection consists of photographs from the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) taken by Agustín Victor Casasola, a Mexican photographer and co-founder of the Mexican Association of Press Photographers. Photographs in the collection also include depictions of daily life in Mexico, and Mexican presidents in the early 20th century. In addition to photographs taken by Casasola, there are additional photographs on Mexico and its politics taken by Casasola's sons after his death in 1938.

Notable figures and events featured in the collection include Porfirio Díaz, Luis Echeverría Álvarez, Francisco "Pancho" Villa, the Ten Tragic Days, and the Occupation of Veracruz.

Biographical Note

Agustín Victor Casasola was born in Mexico City, Mexico on July 28, 1874. He began working at a young age as a typographer for a newspaper, which led him to become a reporter for various newspapers. He also began working as a photojournalist, documenting both sides of the conflict during the Mexican revolution that broke out in 1910.

In 1912, Casasola started the first Mexican news agency, the Agencia Fotográfica Mexicana. Within the year, the agency expanded and was renamed Agencia Mexicana de Información Fotográfica. Casasola was also one of the founders of the Asociación Mexicana de Fotógrafos de Prensa (Mexican Association of Press Photographers).

Casasola also cared deeply about preserving the history of Mexico, founding the Casasola Archive in 1900 with his brother Miguel Casasola to preserve their photography documenting all aspects of life in Mexico. The archive was continued by Casasola’s sons through the 1970s before being acquired by the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History.

Agustín Victor Casasola passed away on March 30, 1938, in Mexico City.
