Historical Note

The Gage Canal was built in the 1880s by Matthew Gage, a Canadian jeweler who filed a claim on 640 acres of land in the recently formed agricultural settlement of Riverside, California. In order for Gage to receive the title to his claim, he was required to bring water to the land, so he began the construction of a canal from the Santa Ana River in San Bernardino.

The Gage Canal, which eventually extended 20.13 miles, irrigated much of the city and allowed for the development of the city of Riverside as well as the expansion of the local citrus industry.
