Collection Scope and Contents

This collection contains journals with notes, ideas for poems, and Hirschman's inner thoughts; poetry manuscripts; artwork; and correspondence. There is an assortment of correspondence on subjects including research for his poetry, interest in other's poems, and letters from publishing companies. The collection also includes artwork and sketches by Hirschman, some of which is based on Japanese characters and his poetry. Jack Hirschman's poetry draws on his political and social activism, touching on topics of politics, love, and death with allusions to historical people and events.

Abstract

This collection consists of notes, poems, manuscripts, correspondence, artwork and other materials pertaining to Jack Hirschman, an American poet and social activist. Topics of his work relate to politics, love, death, and sorrow with allusions to history.

The collection was arranged into four series as follows:

  2. Series 2. Artwork, circa 1960-1963
  3. Series 3. Correspondence, 1955-1989
  4. Series 4. Journals and notes, 1935-1980
