Collection Scope and Contents

This collection consists of an album of photographs depicting various scenery, people, agriculture, and ruins in Paraguay in the early 1900s. Photographs in the album include views of a fleet from the 1912 Revolution, the Encarnación cyclone disaster of 1926, the Jesuit ruins at Jesus y Trinidad, and of the inauguration of the Salesian Agricultural School at Ypacaraí.

The album contains handwritten captions for many of the photos, with descriptions and dates for the materials. The album itself is missing its cover and backing board, as well as some of the original photographs.

Historical Note

The Paraguayan Revolution of 1911 to 1912 included different radical groups, including provisional President Albino Jara, Minister of Exterior Relations Manuel Gondra, civilians, and Gondristas. The revolution was started in Buenos Aires, Argentina due to "Gondrismo." The fight that followed was fought in Paraguayan territory, which resulted in total anarchy. Many Paraguayans fled the country, and national economics and commerce were significantly affected. The revolution ended with the triumph from Gondra's sector, the death of Jara, and the beginning of an era of stability.

The city of Encarnación, formerly known as Itapúa, was damaged by a massive tornado in 1926, leaving the city in shambles and killing hundreds.

Misiones Jesuíticas de La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná y Jesús de Tavarangue (The Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue) is a preserved religious mission located in the Itapúa Department, Paraguay. The mission was found by Jesuit missionaries during 17th century, when South America was being colonized. In 1609, the missionaries began creating religious missions, which continued to be developed for another 150 years.

The Salesian Agricultural School at Ypacaraí was opened after disagreements between the Rector of the College at Asunción and the Paraguayan government, which resulted in the closure of the college. The Salesians (those who are dedicated to the Sacred Heart) moved to another territory after clashes between branches of government, and the exile of Father Ambrose Turriccia to Chile. At the new territory, the Salesians reopened the College and in 1919 they began setting up missionary residences in the villages of Chaco. In 1924, the Salesian Agricultural School at Ypacaraí was opened.
