Historical Note
The Tuskegee Airmen are recognized as the first black servicemen to serve as aviators for the United States military during World War II. Trained at the Tuskegee Instutite, the Tuskegee Airmen refer to the 996 pilots and more than 15,000 ground personnel responsible for training and maintaining the aircraft. The Tuskegee Airmen became one of the most respected fighter groups during the war despite the segregation and discrimination they faced, and their success paved the way for the full integration of the U.S. military in 1948.
