Collection Scope and Contents

The collection's material is related to the Los Angeles River and the Los Angeles River Aqueduct. The materials were used in research for the creator, Blake Gumprecht's book The Los Angeles River: Its Life, Death, and Possible Rebirth, which was published in 1999 by Johns Hopkins University Press. Photographs ranging from the late twentieth to early twenty-first century illustate damage that the Los Angeles River has caused in addition to pollution within the river, graffiti along the river's concrete edges, and popular movies that have been filmed there such as Grease (1978). Correspondence related to different water resource organizations and Gumprecht's progress for his book are included. Research articles, newspapers, and maps of the Los Angeles River and the surrounding area span from the late ninteenth century to early twenty-first century.

Abstract

The collection contains research regarding Blake Gumprecht's book The Los Angeles River: Its Life, Death, and Possible Rebirth. Materials include correspondence, photographs, audio tapes, VHS tapes, and maps. The collection consists of research material dating from the early twentieth century to the early twenty-first century regarding the Los Angeles River and Aqueduct that was utilized by Gumprecht for his book.
