Biographical Note

Theodore C. "Ted" Wellman was born in Brisbane, Australia. After emigrating to California he attended the University of California at Berkeley. After graduating from that institution he began a career with the Standard Oil Company, where he eventually achieved the rank of assistant vice president.

Wellman retired from Standard Oil in 1966. He proceeded to devote himself to conservation issues throughout the State of California, with a particular emphasis on Marin County, where he had resided since 1938.

He served as president of the Marin Conservation League and the Marin Solid Waste Management Committee, from which evolved the Marin County Solid Waste Plan. He was a member of the state advisory committee to review the State Water Plan, and was a vociferous opponent of the Peripheral Canal in all its guises.

Wellman died 21 December 1985.
