Under the leadership of Morrough P. O'Brien, a model of the estuary of the Columbia River was built and tested at the University of California, Berkeley, to study the effects of proposed changes in the navigation channels on currents and sediment movement. The project was sponsored by the North Pacific Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was called the "U.S. Tidal Model Laboratory." A description of the work can be found in "Field and... laboratory studies, navigation channels of the Columbia River Estuary," Proceedings of the 13th Conference on Coastal Engineering, American Society of Civil Engineers, 1972, p. 2475-2498.
