Biographical Note
Victoriano Huerta was born on December 22, 1850, in Colotlán, Jalisco, Mexico. He graduated from the Mexican National Military Academy (Heroico Colegio Militar) in 1872, and by 1890 had reached the rank of Colonel of Engineers. He was made commander of the 3rd Infantry Battalion from 1894-1901, and led successful campaigns against rebels in Sonora and the Yucatan before retiring from the army in 1907 due to health issues.
In 1910, a revolution broke out over the succession of the Mexican president, with President Porfirio Díaz ousted from power by Francisco Madero in 1911. Huerta applied to rejoin the Federal Army under his previous rank in 1910, and pledged allegiance to Madero. Secretly though, Huerta was plotting with U.S. Ambassador Henry Lane Wilson, General Bernardo Reyes, and Félix Díaz to overthrow Madero. In 1913, in an episode known as the Ten Tragic Days (La Decena Trágica), Huerta managed to imprison Díaz and Vice President José María Pino Suárez and engineered their resignations and his takeover of the presidency.
As president, Huerta established a military dictatorship, which displeased the United States government and led to rebellions within Mexico. These forces combined led Huerta to resign on July 15, 1914, and he then went into exile in the United States. After a failed coup d’état, Huerta died in 1915 while in U.S. custody.
